The question that many ponder. Are slow push-ups better than
fast push-ups? Or is it the other way around?
The truth is neither is particularly better than the other. It depends on your workout and what your goals are.
Fast push upsFast push-ups are technically easier to do than slow push-ups, though they work on other aspects of your fitness. By quickly doing push-ups in quick succession, it is closer to a cardiovascular exercise than a strength training workout. Naturally, this also burns calories and fat faster as well.
Slow push ups
Slow push-ups forces your body to slowly carry your body into a low position, and to slowly carry your body back up to your regular position.
This technique puts your body under constant strain and pressure. Unlike traditional push-ups, each rep is much more strenuous and painful. However, because of this, your body will gain strength and muscle mass much more quicker. On top of that, you will also work your core muscles - something that isn't often done in other push-up variations - since your core plays a massive effect in keeping your body stable during your workout.
My suggestion
I would suggest the following technique:
My suggestion
I would suggest the following technique:
- While going down into the push-up, go slow and controlled.
- Once you are in the bottom position, try and be explosive on your way up. This will get your muscles pumped.
- Also, maintain a tight core during the whole movement.
Pseudo Planche Push-ups (short demo video below)
As part of my planche push-up training, I added this pseudo planche push-up to my routine in recent weeks. I find it quite challenging because my wrists are not strong enough due to previous injuries (I felt a little tension and discomfort). But I will continue to practice and hopefully I will be able to perform planche push-ups with my feet off the floor! :) Nevertheless, it is a very good workout for shoulders.
Happy Push-up!

"Arnold's words on push-ups are a reminder that no matter how advanced you get, the basics are always essential. Great advice! 🙏💪"
